Hello

I'm Amy Gracey Nash. I was one of six taken away by the state when my mom decided to school us at home. I am writing about this case to honor my mom and to let the world know how in the early days, homeschooling was not even a word. The concept met with trials and suffering. Some parents were jailed. We were removed by CPS, my parents accused of Neglect. Only through the help of others fighting for this right, and the national attention we got from newspapers and TV did our case prevail.

My Story

Every life has its own unique journey. My journey led me from being homeschooled, to entering a monastery, to leaving a monastery, going to college, and becoming a certified EMDR trauma therapist. While my mom was still alive, I let her know I wanted to write about her work in the homeschooling movement. I found nothing on public record. Only when I sought documents from the Family Court in Oswego did I learn they were sealed becaue it was an "abuse" case. Lucky for me, Mom was alive and signed for the release of those court documents. I'm hoping to tell the story of a brave mother whose determination helped highlight the home schooling movement, through her own sacrifice and ours as well.
